3. Sold OUT - Rte. 23 Listening Room: Daniel Davis
Saturday, April 15th, 2017
@Birthplace of Country Music
Bristol, TN
SORRY, THIS SHOW IS NOW SOLD OUT. The Birthplace of Country Music presents RTE 23 Listening Room Concert featuring acclaimed singer songwriter Daniel Davis. A Wise County native and graduate of The University of Virginia s College at Wise, Davis is well known to music fans throughout the region as principal songwriter and front man for Folk Soul Revival, one of the area s most respected and beloved acts. Blessed with a balladeer s soulful vocals, Davis has a knack for penning poignant, evocative songs with roots planted firmly in the mountains of his birth. Blending the classic sounds of Yoakam and Nelson with more contemporary singer songwriters like Jason Isbell and Justin Townes Earle, Davis s craft is singularly Appalachian in both timbre and style. Over the years his music has been central to the sound of Folk Soul Revival, yet he sits on a collection of songs that have gone unrecorded by the band. The RTE 23 Listening Room will provide a sound stage for this assemblage of unreleased material and offer a new perspective on this authentic and multi-talented artist. Davis achieved second place in the Merlefest s prestigious Chris Austin Songwriting Contest in 2013 for the song Homesick. With Folk Soul Revival Davis has released four albums, with a fifth now in production, and performed at a number of major festivals and esteemed venues throughout the Southeast including Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion, Floydfest, The Carter Family Fold, Asheville s The Grey Eagle, and The Basement in Nashville.

4. Driftwood Is Coming Back To The Willow Tree!
Friday, April 7th, 2017
@The Willow Tree Coffeehouse and Music Room
Johnson City, TN
When most people think of upstate New York, they either imagine bucolic landscapes or working-class towns. As natives of Binghamton, the members of Driftwood hail from a working town, but play music rooted in the land, leaning alternately into folk, old-time, country, punk, and rock, depending on their personal moods and their songs needs. It s sometimes tough to keep any sort of focus on style or sound when you have three different songwriters, guitarist Dan Forsyth concedes. But it also allows us to branch out and explore in ways other bands don t. Also, I think it s important, as a band, to ask ourselves Is this a good next step? I think everyone is very excited to know that it is. Describing the Driftwood sound, banjo player Joe Kollar offers, I consider our sound to be more of an attitude and an approach - the result of all of our influences in a completely open musical forum where the only stipulation is to use bluegrass instruments and create it from the heart. That s as close to being pinned down as Driftwood ever gets. Such has always been the case for artists blurring and blending genre lines in order to innovate. Yes, they wield old-time instruments, but they do so with a punk-rock ethos. I do not know much about punk music, but I do know that it gives me a feeling of tearing into something without inhibition, violinist Claire Byrne says, adding, Old-time music has the same feeling for me. The music was a release for people living extremely hard lives in harsh conditions. In this way, the two styles of music are very similar: It s digging in and making a statement. It s rocking out and feeling totally reborn through the song. Driftwood has been digging in and rocking out since their 2005 formation, playing an average of 150 shows a year. In the beginning, we hit the road constantly with an all-or-nothing attitude, Forsyth confides. We were doing it with a lot of passion, but had no thoughts about long-term sustainability. Life outside of the band was minimal. One thing that I think we started to notice was, when you re always in it, you have no perspective and you start to lose yourself in a weird way. As such, gigging and traveling that much can t help but influence and inform the band,

8. Salvador Dali And The Divine Comedy - Part II: Purgatory - Recp.
Saturday, April 15th, 2017
@The Reece Museum
Johnson City, TN
Salvador Dal and the Divine Comedy Part II: Purgatory opens April 5, 2017 and continues through June 30, 2017. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2017 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. The guest of honor is Dr. Frank Barham, an ETSU alumnus, who, in 2014, donated the Salvador Dal s illustrations for the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. Salvador Dal s surrealist vision makes the 33 prints of Part II: Purgatory, frightening real. Each print illustrates one canto (book chapter) of the Divine Comedy in which Virgil guides Dante up the Mount of Purgatory. In 2016, the Reece Museum displayed Salvador Dal and the Divine Comedy Part I: Inferno. In the spring of 2018, the Reece Museum will display the final installment, Part III: Paradise.
