Appalachian Sustainable Development - ASD

This intermediate -to - advanced level training is designed for growers who understand the basics of forest farming and are ready to get to work and take their operations to the next level. The multi-day workshop will give growers of forest botanicals like ginseng, goldenseal, black cohosh and more an opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience with the technical aspects of individualized planning, growing, and planting. Attendees will hone their plant identification skills, learn propagation methods in a hands-on environment, and prepare voucher specimens. They will gain important background knowledge on federal regulations and learn how to estimate plant populations in the field. During the training, attendees will work together with our experts to develop sample forest farming plans using lands owned by UVA-Wise. This will give plenty of practice and take-home knowledge for attendees to make workable and lasting plans for their own sites. Experts including Jeanine Davis and Eric Burkhart will be guiding participants through a series of activities meant to deepen the grower's skillset, allowing them to further their own forest farming operations back home.

It's always a good idea to check and make sure the dates and locations haven't changed. Be sure to contact the event organizer before making your plans.
