Fred Carter: Primitive Things of Toil and Love Opening Reception: August 3, 2017 from 6 8 p.m. July 28 January 14, 2018 Born in Duffield, Virginia in 1911, Fred Carter did not begin making art until his fifties when a foot injury left him temporarily homebound. A man of deep conviction, Carter spent the next 30 years of his life giving form to his beliefs in stonework, poetry, short stories, painting, and, of course, woodcarving. He displayed many of his works in his Cumberland Museum, the door of which was adorned with the simple message, Primitive Things of Toil and Love. This exhibit celebrates the life, legacy, and work of one of Southwest Virginia s finest artists.

Bristol s own Jackdaw s 7 bring their brand of Appalachian Alternative to Kingsport for one rip roarin good time at the Circus on Friday, Aug. 4! B&B BBQ will be serving! ---- Whether telling the haunting stories of a past generation or speaking of late night, whiskey tinged knife fights, the Jackdaw s 7 present with a vintage swagger that s rare to find. They play with a seasoned ease that comes with years of combined dedication. Their works invoke images of small country church youth spent in the innocence of the mystifying hills of East Tennessee. They come from the pioneering bloodlines that settled these wild back-country hills so long ago and their songs buzz with that same fierce independent spirit. Pulling from the musical heritage that surrounds their hometown of Bristol, they have made their sound homage to those righteous voices that birthed the genre in distant 1927. Singer Jason Wilson has been featured in several bands over the years including, Last In Line, The Ghoultones, The Blue Light Casualties and Stone Soup. Kevin Love has played in local regional and national touring bluegrass acts. Julia Wilson is a great fiddle player with an outstanding voice whom was previously involved with the ETSU Bluegrass Band. Scott Thomas is a legendary Bristol drummer formerly holding down rhythm with Puchin Judy and other notable bands. Bassist Ben Adams has toured with Asheville based Makia Groove, moving from jam band to country. Guitarist JP Parsons is also the lead singer and songwriter for JP Parsons and the American Bandwagon and has been a mainstay in the Tri-Cities music scene for better than 15 years. Jackdaw s 7, presenting Appalachian Alternative music through multi-harmonious vocals, traditional bluegrass instruments paired with classic country interpretation. Sad mournful songs to make Hank smile and tender love songs to make Buddy Holly cry.

Their edgy act that is part carnival freak show, part burlesque, will leave you on the edge of your seat and resisting the urge to cover your eyes, whether it s pounding nails into their face, walking across broken glass, swallowing things they probably shouldn t or plenty of other sideshow stunts that combines a vaudevillian vibe with a punk rock soul. This roving band of tattooed carnies are not for the faint of heart.

Lyrics on the Lawn 2017 Summer Concert Series concludes Thursday, July 27 at 7:00 pm. The FREE concert will be held on the lawn of the Dickson-Williams Mansion in the heart of downtown Greeneville, Tennessee. The concerts take place each Thursday evening in July. The opening act will begin at 7 with intermission scheduled for 7:45 and the headliner takes the stage at 8. Underpass Hailing from Main Street Greeneville, Tn. is Underpass. Formed in 1999, Underpass is an all original, high-energy rock band. Underpass has written and performed over fifty original songs to numerous fans over many cities. The Lyrics on the Lawn opportunity has reunited the band after a ten year hiatus. The very excited members are Sammy Warren, Coleman Gourley, Brian Stewart and John David Parkins all from Greeneville, Tn. Wise Old River Wise Old River blends a variety of influences and instruments that combine tradition with originality. The group features vocalist guitarist Jamen Denton (formerly of Virginia Ground and was recognized as best male vocalist by the GoTriCities.com Music Awards in 2005). Jeanne Denton provides well-crafted harmony vocals and occasional percussion. Jim Denton adds acoustic lap steel, 12 string slide guitar, and bouzouki. Bassist Stephen Marshall joined the band in fall 2010 and plays with an Americana focus bridging musical styles with his honest sound and harmonic vibe. Their sound has been described as Eclectic-Americana. The group has performed on local and national television programs such as the PBS syndicated show Song of the Mountains , which is taped at the Lincoln Theatre in Marion, VA. The show airs on over 90 PBS stations across the United States. Other venues and events include the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion (2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017), Bristol s Paramount Theatre, Virginia Highlands Festival in Abingdon, VA, Hungry Mother Park Arts and Music Festival in Marion, VA, the Little Chicago Blues Festival , the Homegrown Showcase at the Down Home in Johnson City, TN, The Pickin Porch in Bristol, TN, the Tim White Bluegrass Radio Show , Studio One (WETS 89.5 FM) at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN, and many other local and regional events and venues.
