ETSU Slocumb Galleries
Lyn Govette is in her third year as a graduate student in the ETSU Department of Art & Design working on her MFA with an emphasis in Fiber Arts. Her Thesis exhibit will be at the Tipton Gallery 126 Spring St, Johnson City, TN It will be on display from February 27th till March 10, 2017. There will be an opening reception on First Friday March 3rd from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The focus of her thesis exhibit, ES-SEN-TIAL, is Mountain Top Removal (MTR) and the impact of the Southern Appalachian Region by this mining practice. She has been working with her photographs that she has taken in Wise County, Virginia which are then digitally printed on textiles. She uses layering, stitching and other surface design techniques to further enhance the images. The familiarity and comfort of textiles belies the images of MTR destruction on the landscape and to entice the viewer to take a closer look at the works. Her intention is to create this human impacted environment in a gallery setting bring awareness to what is occurring environmentally to these mountains in our pursuit of fossil fuels for energy use.
