Thursday, June 1st, 2017

@William King Museum of Art

Abingdon, VA
Ralph Slatton: Animal Nature Opening Reception: June 1, 2017 from 6 8 p.m. June 2 September 17, 2017 Ralph Slatton s intaglio prints, notable for their raw, unbridled energy, power, and emotion, evoke at once a sense of unease and awe. His animal forms disguise some moral truth, human condition, personal dilemma, or conundrum. It is my intention, Ralph says, to take the viewer down a visual and psychological rabbit hole. A place where animals wear disguises of both the strong and weak, experiencing the freedom of entrapment, and generally revel in the dark side of human foibles. Slatton is a professor at East Tennessee State University, where he spent nearly thirty years teaching drawing, printmaking, and comic book illustration. His works have been exhibited in galleries across the United States and around the world including Taiwan, Japan, Italy, Chile, and the United Kingdom.

8. The Broadcast At Abingdon's Thursday Jams With David Earl

Thursday, June 8th, 2017

@Abingdon Music Experience

If You Like: Grace Potter, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac FREE Show! Three decades from now, a documentary filmmaker in search of his next rockumentary will come across The Broadcast and realize he s hit gold. The story of the rock and soul outfit not only comes with its own high-octane soundtrack, it hits on all the key points: Challenges are overcome, miles are logged, performances are slain and an oft-jaded music industry is enticed. There s dancing. There s a love story. ith a mix of soul, blues and classic rock arrangements, The Broadcast has shared stages with Mavis Staples, John Prine, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, The Wood Brothers, Brandi Carlisle, Keller Williams, Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers, George Porter Jr. (Funky Meters), Betty LaVette, Charles Bradley and Holly Williams, among others. Special Guest: David Earl There s something about David Earl. Like a Rock and Roll Marlboro Man, David Earl s soulful country rock band hails from the Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. Compared to The Band, Ryan Adams, the Boss, and even Lucinda Williams, Earl s potent harmonies, powerful performances, and swagger have had a lasting effect on audiences across the Southeast. On March 18th, David Earl will release his third studio album Catch a Thrill , a bombastic approach to contemporary Appalachian country rock. This concert is part of the 5th annual Thursday Jams series, presented by Blue Ridge Beverage. Music will begin 7:00 pm each Thursday at the Abingdon Market Pavilion, with a beer garden benefitting Abingdon Main Street opening at 6:30 pm. A variety of food truck and local vendors will be on hand offering concessions. The events are free, family-friendly, and attendees are encouraged to bring their chairs and or blankets to enjoy the shows. No outside alcohol is allowed.
