During spring classes herd members would poke their heads into open schoolroom windows. The peeping Bessies were welcomed. I, as an outsider, wasn&rsquo t. To be considered a local of Blairstown your family had to have been an original settler who farmed the rolling hills of the hamlet. With each move friends and home were lost. The foundation for who I was&mdash transformed. Not until I first directed FOOTLOOSE a dozen years ago did I realize that in these unfamiliar towns like Blairstown my presence also brought a change to my new neighbors and classmates. In FOOTLOOSE&rsquo s main character Ren, the outsider, I saw reflections of my past self. And within the residents of FOOTLOOSE&rsquo s Bomont were reflections of my Blairstown neighbors. Each of us strangers approaching the other with firm convictions. But in getting to know the other, there was a rejuvenation. Change fosters growth. Even a variation we may perceive as a negative, from that shift positive results can follow&mdash if we allow ourselves to embrace an undoubtable hope for renewal. Johnson City, TN
Participants ages 6-14 learn about their local history through historic-based crafts, games, music, storytelling, and trips on the nature & the cave. First week-Native American History Second Week-Revolutionary History, Third Week-Civil War History. Each week is $100 for non-members and $90 for members. Sessions run 9am-2pm, Monday through Friday. Ralph Slatton: Animal Nature Opening Reception: June 1, 2017 from 6 8 p.m. June 2 September 17, 2017 Ralph Slatton s intaglio prints, notable for their raw, unbridled energy, power, and emotion, evoke at once a sense of unease and awe. His animal forms disguise some moral truth, human condition, personal dilemma, or conundrum. It is my intention, Ralph says, to take the viewer down a visual and psychological rabbit hole. A place where animals wear disguises of both the strong and weak, experiencing the freedom of entrapment, and generally revel in the dark side of human foibles. Slatton is a professor at East Tennessee State University, where he spent nearly thirty years teaching drawing, printmaking, and comic book illustration. His works have been exhibited in galleries across the United States and around the world including Taiwan, Japan, Italy, Chile, and the United Kingdom.
