Tuesday, December 27th, 2016
@Barter Theatre
Abingdon, VA
" The classic ghost story of Christmas." A traditional adaptation by Richard Rose from the Charles Dickens Classic The joy of the holiday season returns with this sparkling production, and a beloved and highly requested favorite of Barter patrons. Come and relive the sheer exhilaration of Ebenezer Scrooge&rsquo s ghost-guided look into his past, present and future. Witness his release from his small and selfish life to a life of giving, brotherhood and love. A spirited gift to treasure with family and friends, it guarantees you will leave wrapped in the warmth of the holiday spirit. Download study guide. Director s Notes The Spirits of the Holiday There is a reason that Charles Dickens&rsquo holiday tale is read and performed year, after year, after year. And, no matter how many times you have read it, seen a movie of it, or seen it performed, the story still makes you laugh, cry and long to be a better human being. Regardless of how you celebrate your holiday, or what specific beliefs you hold, Charles Dickens&rsquo gets you into the holiday mood. Why? The answer is simple. Dickens is merely asking his audience to practice the basic tenet of almost all religious teachings worldwide that is, give of what you have for all humanity, give generously, and give of yourself not just your material wealth. And, Dickens tells the story in the most entertaining of manners, in the form of a mystery&mdash complete with apparitions, surprises and plot twists and turns. All the while, Dickens is really reminding us to be kind to the people we encounter everyday. And we need reminding. In the wake of corporate greed and the news that everyday the rich get richer and the poor, poorer, we need to be reminded to do our share. To give. To give of our material wealth to those very much in need. To give of ourselves, unselfishly. &ldquo I have endeavored in this Ghostly little book, to raise the Ghost of an Idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their houses pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it. Their faithful Friend and Servant,&rdquo &ndash Charles Dickens, December 1843 May God bless us! Everyone!
