@Art in the Heart Gallery
Kingsport, TN
An exciting new art program for children ages 8-14 is now being offered by Engage Kingsport. Imagine That! led by Patti Lawrence and Anne Thwaites will take place on Saturdays in the art studio on the second floor of the Farmer s Market Carousel building. The program will encourage creativity by providing open-ended art assignments. Each month, students will be presented with a different art assignment to complete. For instance, the project for September will be to create a 3-D Kooky Bird from various materials such as recyclables, papier-m ch , paint, wire, feathers, and anything else kids want to use. Children will be encouraged to use their imagination to visualize a bizarre-looking bird, draw a color sketch of it, and then make a three-dimensional interpretation of their bird. Later projects will include designing a fantastical vehicle and creating a diorama of an amazing, newly discovered planet. These are not make and take quickie art projects. They will take time and concentration to complete. That is why each class will last two hours, and each project will take three classes to complete. There will be no wrong answers to these assignments. Kids can create whatever they can imagine. These projects are designed to give children the opportunity to create freely, learn to use a variety of media, improve self-confidence and, most importantly, develop problem-solving skills. If the bird is top heavy and won t stand up, the child will have to fix it. If a certain paper shape has to be exactly the same on both sides, the teacher will encourage the student to figure out how to do that. It s amazing to see what kids can come up with and their creative use of materials. No one is born a creative genius that kind of thinking must be nurtured through the opportunities for creative problem solving. The first session will be held on Saturdays, September 9, 16, and 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $75 for the month. Johnson City, TN
North and South India come together in the Wind Whisperers of India, featuring Ronu Majumdar from North India on Bansuri flute and Rajhesh Vaidhya from South India on saraswati veena, the multi-stringed chordophone. The virtuoso duo performs the ancient art of jugalbandi, a duet of two solo musicians. Majumdar is a Grammy nominee and has recorded extensively for Bollywood artists. Vaidhya is known not only for his blistering speed, but also for his use of electric and amplified instruments. He also is involved in recording for cinema. Other whisperers Vinod V.R. Venkataraman, on mridangam, and Harshad Kanetkar on tabla will provide percussion and additional traditional instrumentation.

The Mountain States Dragon Boat Festival is a free, all-day family event that has grown into a tradition for the Tri-Cities region. The Dragon Boat Festival events include all-day competitive races of up to 40 local dragon boat teams with a final championship round, opening parade of dragon boat teams, food trucks and Kids Race. Proceeds from the 2017 Dragon Boat Festival will benefit Circle of Hope. The Circle of Hope program provides extra resources to cancer patients and families who may need financial help while receiving medical care. Join the fight!
