On December 4, 1956, four young musicians gathered at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions ever. &ldquo Million Dollar Quartet&rdquo brings that legendary night to life, featuring a score of rock hits including " Blue Suede Shoes," " Fever," " That& 39 s All Right," " Sixteen Tons," " Great Balls of Fire," " Walk the Line," " Whole Lotta Shakin& 39 Goin& 39 On," " Who Do You Love?," " Matchbox," " Folsom Prison Blues," &ldquo Hound Dog" and more. Note All cigarettes used in the show are non-tobacco herbal cigarettes and are just used for effect. Director s Notes Music is defined as: the art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color. Simply put: music is the sound of our very soul. I believe it follows that Rock & 39 n Roll is the soul& 39 s most primal expression. It burst from the seams of the late 1940& 39 s and would, by the mid-50& 39 s, cause a revolution of hip swiveling teens to scare the daylights out of their parents. At the time our play takes place, this Sound Revolution was just beginning. And Sam Phillips was its greatest architect. Sam knew the awesome power of music from the time he was in grade school. The favorite nephew of his mute Aunt Emma, he learned that rhythmic gestures could make a wordless language. He soon understood that the language of music could transcend the borders of the physical and of social status, color, age, and even time. The Jake Quillin Band -- 11:30pm Jake Quillin is a blues guitarist and singer songwriter from the Eastern mountains of Tennessee. His music takes the mind to a place immortalized by the late greats of blues and rock and roll. Melodic and moody vocals are matched by scorching, soulful guitar solos that reach stratospheric heights. His most recent project, The Jake Quillin Band, is a bluesy, psychedelic take on soul and r&b music. Made up of Quillin on guitar and vocals, Nick Castro on bass, Zach Ross on keyboards, and Quillin s longtime drummer Mike Lubrano. Quillin s lyrics and melodies are reminiscent of the early Motown days, with an edge of realness that cuts through. This unmistakable authenticity, combined with unshakable rhythm, creates a rich sound that goes straight to the heart. An exciting new art program for children ages 8-14 is now being offered by Engage Kingsport. Imagine That! led by Patti Lawrence and Anne Thwaites will take place on Saturdays in the art studio on the second floor of the Farmer s Market Carousel building. The program will encourage creativity by providing open-ended art assignments. Each month, students will be presented with a different art assignment to complete. For instance, the project for September will be to create a 3-D Kooky Bird from various materials such as recyclables, papier-m ch , paint, wire, feathers, and anything else kids want to use. Children will be encouraged to use their imagination to visualize a bizarre-looking bird, draw a color sketch of it, and then make a three-dimensional interpretation of their bird. Later projects will include designing a fantastical vehicle and creating a diorama of an amazing, newly discovered planet. These are not make and take quickie art projects. They will take time and concentration to complete. That is why each class will last two hours, and each project will take three classes to complete. There will be no wrong answers to these assignments. Kids can create whatever they can imagine. These projects are designed to give children the opportunity to create freely, learn to use a variety of media, improve self-confidence and, most importantly, develop problem-solving skills. If the bird is top heavy and won t stand up, the child will have to fix it. If a certain paper shape has to be exactly the same on both sides, the teacher will encourage the student to figure out how to do that. It s amazing to see what kids can come up with and their creative use of materials. No one is born a creative genius that kind of thinking must be nurtured through the opportunities for creative problem solving. The first session will be held on Saturdays, September 9, 16, and 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $75 for the month.
