Crispy chicken dinners. The State s best indoor water parks. Picturesque wine and chocolate boat cruises. The world s largest Christmas store. These days it s also home to one of the most exciting rock n roll acts to come from the heartland, or anywhere, in many a year. Greta Van Fleet which took its name from one of the close-knit community s town elders is a hard rocking quartet whose creative ambitions and achievements reach far beyond the ages of the four band members, not all of them old enough to have voted in last November s election. On its debut EP Black Smoke Rising, the group deftly straddles the line between timeless and future, sounding at once like many things you ve heard before and also something you ve never heard before. The three brothers twins Josh (vocals) and Jake (guitar) Kiszka, younger brother Sam Kiszka (bass, keyboards) and drummer Danny Wagner have turned their rich and varied musical background into an arresting m lange of rock n roll with flavors of metal, pop, blues and grunge, the result of years of practice, study and familial good times. When we were not even born yet my father played us blues music and R&B, soul music all the good stuff, says Sam. Dad Kiszka was a musician himself, playing guitar and harmonica. Our parents had a lot of vinyl laying around, recalls Josh, so we grew up listening to that and really liked playing with the vinyl albums putting them on the turntable and speeding them up and slowing them down. But, yeah, I really liked the blues and the soul and the funk Wilson Pickett is the big one, and Joe Cocker, those kinds of things. The Kiszka kids furthered their music education during winter ski trips to Michigan s Yankee Springs, where a plethora of family and friends would gather with instruments. Someone was playing something nearly every minute of the day, and Josh, Jake and Sam soaked it up with relish. Every year was better than Christmas, Josh recalls. In the evenings or during the day, there was always music being made there, everybody getting together and experimenting with sounds, having

Friday, August 4th, 2017
@Barter Theatre
Abingdon, VA
From the authors of " The Dixie Swim Club" and " The Red Velvet Cake War" By Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten A laugh-a-minute comedy about four Southern women, all needing to escape their day-to-day routines, drawn together by fate&mdash and an impromptu happy hour. Randa, a perfectionist and workaholic Dot, still reeling from her husband&rsquo s recent demise earthy and boisterous Marlafaye, a good ol&rsquo Texas gal and new to town, Jinx, a spunky fireball, offers her services as a life coach for these women. Hilarious misadventures and the occasional liquid refreshment lead the ladies to discover lasting friendships and a renewed determination to live in the moment. Director s Notes &ldquo Life is short. Spend it with people who make you laugh.&rdquo Despite what we&rsquo re told as kids, making new friends can be hard, especially as adults. We don&rsquo t always have built in ways to meet them like we did when we were little, and we are more settled in who we are and sometimes less likely to change to let a new person in. There are so many things that keep us apart: politics, family, fear of judgment, busy schedules, a focus on technology and achievement. We run around staring into our iPhones all day in a way that cuts out even the most happenstance of conversations and connections. And yet, sometimes there are people that come into our lives who break down all those walls. Their humor and honesty disarm us and open us, and suddenly, we&rsquo re taking risks and having fun in ways we never saw coming. In these divided times, it&rsquo s maybe the most life-affirming thing we can do&mdash to forge real friendships. To celebrate all the things that are common between all of us, and to laugh at the things that, at first glance, made us think we were so different from each other. Sit back and laugh with four new friends who couldn&rsquo t be more different, but who find out that what they most need is the adventure they can only have with each other. Katy Brown, Director The Savannah Sipping Society Cast & Credits Cast Randa Covington: Amy Baldwin Dot Haigler: Mary Lucy Bivins Marlafaye Mosey: Tricia Matthews Jinx Jenkins: Wendy Mitchell Piper A special cameo in Act I will be played by Sarah Vishnev ? 5. Unspoken Tradition - At The Capitol Theatre Of Greeneville
Saturday, August 5th, 2017
@Capitol Theatre
Greeneville, TN
The August edition of the Capitol Theatre Bluegrass Revival series features Unspoken Tradition. From the hotbed of North Carolina s Bluegrass country, in a region where great picking and singing is the norm, Unspoken Tradition rises to the top. The Cherryville-based five piece band consisting of Audie McGinnis (Guitar, Vocals), Lee Shuford (Bass, Vocals), Tim Gardner (Fiddle, Vocals), Ty Gilpin (Mandolin, Vocals), and Zane McGinnis (Banjo) follows its acclaimed first release Simple Little Town with a stellar sophomore effort in Miles Between. Like the debut release, which included Top 20 placement on the Bluegrass Unlimited Radio Chart, Miles Between is predominantly original songs written by members of the band. The songs are played with passion and the lyrics are highly personal and thoughtful sometimes tragic. From the syncopated kick-off with Point of Rocks Station, written by Paula Breedlove and Brad Davis, to the super bluesy timing switch-up of One More Drink, penned by Lee Shuford, Miles Between is both exciting and original. The Bullet, written by Audie McGinnis, breaks down presumed stereotypical Bluegrass subject matter and gives the listener a unique perspective on conflict through the unexpected point of view of an inanimate object. Been In Love Before by Ty Gilpin is a song with a bitter tinge about love lost, but not forgotten and Rivers That I ve Crossed by Lee Shuford tells of a tragedy that s heartbreaking with the vocal emotion to match. The title track Miles Between Them from Audie McGinnis is a relatable song about relationships tested by life on the road. Miles Between includes a fast moving traditional style instrumental from Gilpin where high speed, melodic breaks trade off each other. The band also includes what was a trademark subject from their previous album the struggle of making a living from the land with One Mule Plow written by Patrick McDougal. With this release, Unspoken Tradition rises to the challenge faced by every artist following a strong debut with and even more impressive second album. Doors Open: 6pm Ticket cost: $10.00 Lonesome Pine Bluegrass Band takes the stage at 7pm Unspoken Tradition will take the stage at 8pm Concessions (Soda, water, beer, popcorn) available Free Wi-Fi in the theatre! Come try it out! For more information check out the webpage for Unspoken Tradition at http: unspokentradition.com home, or view the band s Facebook page at https: www.facebook.com UnspokenTraditionBluegrass

8. Gem Brulee Burlesque Show Ft. Jalopy Junction
Saturday, August 5th, 2017
@Gypsy Circus Cider Company
Kingsport, TN
Hold on to your bloomers, Tri Cities! Jalopy Junction is making a return with yet another dazzling show for your entertainment! This time, take a walk on the wild side with us as we celebrate the centuries old performance of burlesque! The term stems from the Italian phrase burla which means to mock, trick, or joke. In the 16th century, a burlesque performance could be described as a parody or an outlandish caricature like performance. Typically, performers would mock famous artists or cultural figures of the time and create over the top characters. While burlesque often highlights the comedic nature, it wasn t until later that the art of the striptease was introduced. Our evening will feature a version leaning more toward these comedic roots of the performance with a little dash of risqu for the perfect recipe for a great night! Get fired up with Opie s Pizza Wagon providing delicious wood-fired pizza options for your all your heart s desires! 21 event
