JOHNSON CITY, TN Our State of the Union by Michael Fischerkeller is at Slocumb Galleries The East Tennessee State University department of art and design and Slocumb Galleries in partnership with ETSU Votes and the Honors College present Our State of the Union by Michael Fischerkeller from Jan. 17 to Feb. 9. The artist s talk is Feb. 9, at 6 p.m., during the reception from from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Slocumb Galleries. Every January, the President of the United States delivers the The State of the Union, addressing Congress and the nation to report on the condition of the country, highlighting areas of progress and concern, as well as outline a legislative agenda. As 2017 is an inauguration year, artist Fischekeller provides the citizenry of this country, an opportunity to reverse role, and address social concerns to the country s new leadership. Fischerkeller states that the objective of the exhibition Our State of the Union is to enable the voices of the social collective to express through artwork to the recently elected president and others our views on critical social issues requiring immediate attention and action. The unstated perspectives of the social collective are visualized by Fischkeller through street-art inspired, large scale paintings that combine classical images with the contemporary vernacular. The painter transcribes Truths primarily by employing acrylic spray paint, an instrument of the street artist, as the street is most often and most severely deprived of social justice. Furthermore, he appropriates classical images from centuries-old artwork, often of moralist movements, and embedded into compositions in ways that accommodate his objective. Consistent with Fischerkeller s rebellious undertone, these historic artworks were generally commissioned or acquired by their era s social elite, thus, he considers appropriation of their imagery today in the service of socially-conscious work to be particularly fitting. He describes the work as speaking to and for issues on which elected officials have made little or no progress (or exacerbated) over the last decade or more, including but not limited to gun violence, climate change, criminal justice reform, protection from foreign enemies of the state, law enforcement, campaign finance reform, and Wall Street corruption. These issues, according to the artist, when phrased as such by politicians, belie their manifestations in day to-day events, as citizens witness and experience in real life, violent school shootings that take young lives, droughts and wildfires that devastate family farms

The workshop is $20 a person, and it will be due February 4th at Lifestyle s front desk. You may choose to pay in advance. If you are not a member of Lifestyles, please come 10 minutes in advance to fill out a health profile. Limited space is availble. Singer-songwriter Beth Snapp might be considered pop infused roots, but her appeal has little to do with the box of a genre. It s a connection. She flits around and between folk, bluegrass, pop, early R&B and jazz to create a unique sound with one purpose to serve a story. Beth highlights the complex emotions that fall on every day moments, and reels the listener in with an I ve been there before kind of sensation. Her new album Write Your Name Down , recounts the introspection and growth of a new chapter in life. Produced by Grammy winning bluegrass guitarist Tim Stafford, this album features a number of acclaimed artists as well as Beth s talented band, whose members bring diverse backgrounds to further engrain her detour from standard classifications of music. Regardless of style, Beth hovers where modern meets tradition, to create an experience that speaks to the listener. This performance is sponsored in part by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission. The Tennessee Arts Commission is a state agency that cultivates the arts for the benefit of all Tennesseans and their communities.

The Johnson City Area HBA will present the 48th Annual Home and Garden Show February 17 - 19, 2017 and we are pleased to be returning to the Mountain States Health Alliance Athletic Center (Mini Dome) on East Tennessee State University campus.. The Annual Home & Garden Show is the place for you to find what s new in building, remodeling, landscaping and most anything related to your home and garden. Need information about a new loan or refinance? Looking to update the kitchen cabinets or do something new with the master bathroom? Want the opportunity to speak with landscape architects about that area in your yard? You ll find the resources to answer your questions all in one place. Make sure to bring the kids to experience the Kid s Zone where children will be encouraged to experience a workshop area created just for them and will have the opportunity to build, decorate, create and learn in a kid-friendly environment. Show hours: Friday, February 17, 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Saturday, February 18, 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Sunday, February 19, 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Tickets for this event will be General Admission and will be available on the days of the show or in advance through EventBrite. Tickets are $5 per person per day. Children 12 and under admitted free when accompanied by paying adult. A Grand Prize Door Prize drawing for a $500 shopping spree will be awarded at the close of the show on Sunday. You do not have to be present to win. Don t miss it!

7. Maple Syrup Making With Pancake Breakfast

Help gather sap flowing from our trees and watch it being boiled down to sweet maple syrup. Pancake breakfast begins at 8:00 through 10:30. Maple Syrup will be cooked down all day, so come on out and join us at any time! Admission will be $5 for adults and $2.50 for children twelve and under. Breakfast is $1.00 extra.
