Sunday with Friends Belle Boggs

Sunday, February 12th, 2017

Washington County Public Library

Sunday with Friends continues when Belle Boggs speaks at the Washington County Public Library, Abingdon, Va., Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. Acclaimed young Southern writer, she talks about her life in writing. "Mattaponi Queen," her 2010 collection of inter-related short stories, is a portrait of a community on the Mattaponi River in eastern Virginia. Her new work, "The Art of Waiting," is contemplation on fertility and the many choices to making a life and making a family. As she contemplates her realization that she might never be able to conceive, she ranges widely in her thoughts about the natural world, literature and contemporary film, as well as telling stories of couples struggling with fertility issues. In 2011, Boggs was named "Best New Southern Author" by Southern Living magazine, and her work has appeared or is forthcoming in the Paris Review, Glimmer Train, the Oxford American, Orion and other publications. She grew up in King William County, Virginia, and is a writer and teacher. Her first book, "Mattaponi Queen," was published in June 2010 and won the Bakeless Prize and the Library of Virginia Award. It was also short-listed for the 2010 Frank O'Connor Short Story Award, was one of Kirkus Review's top fiction debuts for 2010, was long-listed for The Story Prize, and was a finalist for the Library of Virginia People's Choice Award for fiction. Her fiction and nonfiction have appeared in The Paris Review, Orion, Harper's, Glimmer Train, Ecotone, the Sun, and the Oxford American, among other publications. She teaches at North Carolina State University and lives in Chatham County, North Carolina, with her husband, daughter and two cats. Free and open to the public.
