Weird and wonderful street performers will fill downtown Abingdon for the 3rd Annual Main Street Busker Fest on Saturday, September 2nd from 12-5. We ve lined up acts from all over the region & country, including several new circus acts, to thrill your senses. From fire-eaters to magicians, contortionists, mimes, one-man bands and everything in between, there won t be a corner of the Main Street that will disappoint. The festival is FREE! Enjoy a weekend in our beautiful town, voted by USA Today as one of the Top 10 Towns in the South. There is something for all ages! The Imagination Station, presented by Paper Moon Studio & Barter Youth Academy is all for kids & kids at heart from 11-3pm on the Barter Green. Join them for FREE interactive craft making and improv workshops. Wear your costumes & bring your friends! If you have a little performer on your hands, they can busk too!

@Art in the Heart Gallery

An exciting new art program for children ages 8-14 is now being offered by Engage Kingsport. Imagine That! led by Patti Lawrence and Anne Thwaites will take place on Saturdays in the art studio on the second floor of the Farmer s Market Carousel building. The program will encourage creativity by providing open-ended art assignments. Each month, students will be presented with a different art assignment to complete. For instance, the project for September will be to create a 3-D Kooky Bird from various materials such as recyclables, papier-m ch , paint, wire, feathers, and anything else kids want to use. Children will be encouraged to use their imagination to visualize a bizarre-looking bird, draw a color sketch of it, and then make a three-dimensional interpretation of their bird. Later projects will include designing a fantastical vehicle and creating a diorama of an amazing, newly discovered planet. These are not make and take quickie art projects. They will take time and concentration to complete. That is why each class will last two hours, and each project will take three classes to complete. There will be no wrong answers to these assignments. Kids can create whatever they can imagine. These projects are designed to give children the opportunity to create freely, learn to use a variety of media, improve self-confidence and, most importantly, develop problem-solving skills. If the bird is top heavy and won t stand up, the child will have to fix it. If a certain paper shape has to be exactly the same on both sides, the teacher will encourage the student to figure out how to do that. It s amazing to see what kids can come up with and their creative use of materials. No one is born a creative genius that kind of thinking must be nurtured through the opportunities for creative problem solving. The first session will be held on Saturdays, September 9, 16, and 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $75 for the month. Toddler Time is every Tuesday & Thursday from Aug. 8 - Sept. 21! Designed for children ages 2-5, it is a great opportunity for toddlers to play in the water without the interruption of older children. Toddler Time takes place in the toddler area of the outdoor water park. Other areas of the water park are not open during Toddler Time. Admission is $3 per person. Children age 2 and under get in free. We hope to see you splashing with us at Toddler Time!

The September edition of the Capitol Theatre Bluegrass Revival series features Wilson Banjo Co.. Wilson Banjo Co. is a hard driving Bluegrass band from South Carolina, founded by Steve Wilson, Banjo picker & Master Luthier. Steve not only picks the banjo but builds Custom Wilson Banjo s and performs Vintage Guitar Repairs & Restoration. The band was initially formed to promote the custom banjos, but has since taken on a life of its own. This group of well-seasoned musicians have garnered significant airplay on bluegrass radio. Their sound is presented just the wayfans of traditional bluegrass music would want, with superb instrumentals and great vocals.
