7. 2017 Master Gardener Training Program

The 2017 Master Gardener Training program begins January 10 and runs through May 2 on Tuesday evenings, 6-9 pm. The 50-hour program is open to applicants throughout Southwestern Virginia and Northeastern Tennessee. The course is based on a wealth of educational materials developed by Virginia Cooperative Extension, a community outreach program of Virginia Tech. It s the perfect forum to develop and enhance gardening skills of all levels and the perfect opportunity to meet others that share your interest in gardening! Early bird registration cost is $135 which includes a copy of the Master Gardener Handbook. Two people may register together for a reduced rate of $180 per pair. After Dec. 21st, the price is $155 for individuals or $200 for a pair. Applications are due by December 21, 2016. Registration ends January 3, 2017. For years, home was a place The Ragbirds rarely visited. The band s music a genre-bending hybrid of indie-pop melodies, global rhythms and songwriting styles influenced from all over the world was as broad as their audience, which stretched from the group s hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan, to the shores of Osaka, Japan (where they scored a Number One pop hot with the song Book of Matches ). Show by show, in venues ranging from rock clubs and performing arts centers to festivals encompassing everything from bluegrass to electronica, the Ragbirds developed a well-deserved reputation as one of the most dynamic, high-spirited live bands in roots music. Written and recorded in the wake of the birth of co-founders Erin Zindle and Randall Moore s first child, The Threshold & The Hearth the band s fifth studio album, out March 25 on Rock Ridge Music adds another dimension to the band s catalog. It s an album that explores the ways in which love and family relationships can weather the storms of life, year after year. An album that asks questions. An album that offers an answer, too: hope. I ve been traveling with bands since I was a teenager, says Zindle, a multi-instrumentalist who doubles as the band s chief songwriter and frontwoman. I ve written a lot of songs about my experiences on the road. For a while, The Ragbirds played a lot of different styles of world music: Celtic, tango, African numbers, gypsy-sounding pieces You could pinpoint those songs to a specific region, so the music itself felt like a tour around the world. But we re coming home with this album. There s still a worldly feel, but there s also the sense that The Threshold & The Hearth is the sound we ve been searching for. I feel like we re the alchemist who traveled so far, only to discover that what he was seeking was always at home. With influences ranging from Paul Simon to Peter Gabriel, the band turned to Grammy-nominated producer Jamie Candiloro for his help on the album. Candiloro s influences were similarly wide-ranging, with a resume that included credits on albums by R.E.M., Willie Nelson, the Eagles and Ryan Adams. If You Like: Jason Isbell, Townes Van Zandt, Dave Rawlings Machine, Hayes Carll, John Prine, Steve Earle Fresh off the success of his recently released album, Single Mothers, Justin Townes Earle announced the companion album Absent Fathers to be released January 13, 2015. Also comprised of 10 tracks, Absent Fathers was recorded alongside Single Mothers as a double album, but as Justin began to sequence it, he felt each half needed to make its own statement and they took on their own identities. In describing Single Mothers, NPR describes the album as " ...mov ing between evocative portraits of place set in knotty emotional frames, prickly confessions of destructive patterns, and melancholic eloquence in the wake of short-lived love affairs." The Sun UK hailed the album, noting " Justin& 39 s songcraft is fast maturing and this is a concise exercise in laying emotions bare," while No Depression summed up Justin& 39 s career by saying " No longer needing to beg for attention, he& 39 s built a career that& 39 s brought him critical acclaim and a well-deserved reputation for consistent artistic integrity." Once compared to a man who wears many suits, in thirty-two short years Justin Townes Earle has experienced more than most, both personally and professionally. Between releasing four full-length-critically-acclaimed albums, constant touring, multiple stints in rehab, a new found sobriety, being born Steve Earle& 39 s son, amicable and not-so-amicable break-ups with record labels, and facing the trials and tribulations of everyday life, it& 39 s safe to say JTE has quite the story to tell. His fifth album (and first ever on Vagrant Records) serves as the perfect platform for such narrations. As a recently married, sober man JTE writes from a point of maturity and content we& 39 ve not seen before on past records. " One day I just realized it& 39 s not cool to die young, and it& 39 s even less cool to die after 30," Justin states as he reflects on a life past and his newly found clarity.
