1. Restoration of the American chestnut: A marriage of breeding and biotechnology

The American chestnut is a unique example of a tree species, decimated by introduced pathogens, that is on the verge of restoration. For over thirty years, the American Chestnut Foundation has been breeding chestnut trees to introduce disease resistance from Chinese chestnut into a genetically diverse population of American chestnut. The major bottleneck has been screening the thousands of trees necessary to identify disease-resistance individuals with American chestnut traits. Dr. Jared Westbrook will present a public talk at the Washington County Public Library in Abingdon at 7:00 on Friday, February 10th to discuss how recent progress in genome sequencing technology is being used to accelerate restoration of this iconic tree. Sponsored by the Southwest Virginia Restoration Branch of the Virginia Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation.

Singer-songwriter Beth Snapp might be considered pop infused roots, but her appeal has little to do with the box of a genre. It s a connection. She flits around and between folk, bluegrass, pop, early R&B and jazz to create a unique sound with one purpose to serve a story. Beth highlights the complex emotions that fall on every day moments, and reels the listener in with an I ve been there before kind of sensation. Her new album Write Your Name Down , recounts the introspection and growth of a new chapter in life. Produced by Grammy winning bluegrass guitarist Tim Stafford, this album features a number of acclaimed artists as well as Beth s talented band, whose members bring diverse backgrounds to further engrain her detour from standard classifications of music. Regardless of style, Beth hovers where modern meets tradition, to create an experience that speaks to the listener. This performance is sponsored in part by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission. The Tennessee Arts Commission is a state agency that cultivates the arts for the benefit of all Tennesseans and their communities.

7. Sold OUT Manatees And Diving = Amazing Three Day Trip!

Join Immersed Scuba on our most popular U.S. trip of the year! We will be staying at the Beautiful Waterfront Best West Crystal River. This hotel is conveniently located on the water and is where we load our privately chartered boats to see the manatees. On Friday at 4pm, Zach and Dale will lead one dive before sunset. Then once the sun goes down they will do a night dive for our more adventurous divers. Saturday is full of fun for everyone! After breakfast at the hotel, we will load the boats and our staff will guide you in the search for manatees! We will be on the water from 8am to Noon. This is a perfect time for the entire family to get in the water and snorkel with manatees. Unlike most tours, by renting the entire boat, we get to spend hours of time interacting with the manatees. Manatees are so inquisitive you will fall in love with them instantly! Water temperature is 72, but the air will be chilly so please bring a 3mm-5mm wet suit. If you don t have one that s ok, the dive shop located at the hotel has them availablefor rent. Saturday Afternoon, Any one that still has energy can join Dale at Devils Den. This dive site is one of the most interesting in the US. To enter the dive site, you have to go down stairs through a little cave opening where the lagoon awaits you. Once down the stairs, there are decks, waist deep, to put on your fins. When you look up you can see the sky through an opening above you. This gives you the feeling of being under the earth but with the reassurance you can see the sky. This is Zach s favorite spring in Florida. It is a great place to dive for fun, do check off dives, or build confidence diving through swim throughs. Water temp is 72 and the bottom does not silt up. Snorkeling is also welcome but you have to be 6 years old. Sunday Morning we wrap up this great weekend with breakfast at the hotel, then off to Rainbow River (8am) for a drift dive or snorkel. The Rainbow River is the cleanest drift dive you will find on our coast. Water temp is 72 and the visibility is 30-50 FEET in a river! This is a great
