7. Sherlock Holmes And the American Problem

Tuesday, October 10th, 2017

@Barter Theatre

Abingdon, VA
Inspired by the Works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle By R. Hamilton Wright Sherlock Holmes is back on the Barter Theatre stage with a new adventure. It&rsquo s Queen Victoria&rsquo s 50th year on the British Throne and Annie Oakley is the toast of London with Buffalo Bill&rsquo s Wild West Extravaganza. Join the chase full of mystery, suspense, deceit and brilliant deductions as Victorian England is smashed together with the Wild West in a case that only Sherlock Holmes can unravel. Download study guide. Director s Notes When Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes, the world was in desperate need of him. The Industrial Revolution had been grinding away long enough for us to see that it had its consequences: children were suffering in terrible working conditions, soot and smog blocked out the sun for months on end, organized crime was blossoming underneath all of that darkness... People needed someone who could look through the smog and see that things were still &lsquo elementary&rsquo if you knew which things to look at and which to ignore. Sherlock was the perfect human machine&mdash his brain was the celebration of all we had learned from the mechanization of the world, and simultaneously, the antidote to it. Consequently, people were mad for him then, and we are still mad for him today. Like the Victorians, we see how fast the world is moving, how exponentially more complicated things feel, and how technology, for all its wonders, can sometimes feel just beyond our ability to control it. We continue to read these books and to crave new Sherlock stories on our movie and TV screens &ndash there&rsquo s even a time honored tradition of asserting that he actually lived. The Sherlock museum in London at 221B Baker Street is set up to look like he really lived there, down to the tiniest detail. (Google it and you can take a wonderful 3D tour of the premises.) People celebrate his birthday. Stories and fan lit often feature actual historical characters that would have lived at the same time he did. Our play today lives in that vein. In 1887, Buffalo Bill and his Wild West Show truly appeared in London. It was Queen Victoria&rsquo s Golden Jubilee, and people from all over the world who had descended on the city to celebrate were dazzled by gunfights, tricks on horseback, bison and the world famous

9. The Sound Of Hope

Monday, September 25th, 2017

@The Reece Museum

Johnson City, TN
The Sound of Hope: Music as Solace, Resistance, and Salvation in the Camps of Auschwitz and Terez n By Dr. Kellie Dubel Brown The belief in music s incomparable ability to touch and resonate with the human spirit traces back to ancient civilization through storytelling and philosophical musings. According to Victor Hugo, the celebrated 19th century French poet and novelist, Music expresses that whichcannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent. The Nazi leadership recognized the power of music and chose to harness it with exacting aptitude and malevolence toward those they deemed inferior. They forced prisoners in concentration camps such as Auschwitz to form orchestras whose music became an essential cog in the Nazi machinery as prisoners marched to and from work details or as the SS sought entertainment. The Third Reich established a ghetto known as Terez n where great numbers of Czech intellectuals and artists were crammed into a closed community, which turned into a twisted cultural experiment and an opportunity for the Nazis to deceive the International Red Cross and the world into believing that the Jews were being treated well and living full lives. But music was not only a tool of the Nazi regime. For the Jews and other persecuted peoples, songs of resistance could be secretly transmitted orally or scribbled down on scraps of paper as a way to share and document their indescribable circumstances as well as to cope and sustain morale. The creation of art, the performance of music, all part of the imaginative mind, withstood Nazi attempts to silence it. By embracing acts of creativity, the oppressed discovered that they could transcend their circumstances, whether they found themselves in a hiding place, or a ghetto, or a concentration camp. Dr. Kellie Brown first became interested in the plight of musicians during the Holocaust in the early 1990s when she stumbled across a novel in a used bookstore where the main character was a violinist who smuggled false papers to help Jewish orchestra members. Since that time, Dr. Brown has become a recognized expert on music in the Holocaust and specifically on the women s orchestra at Auschwitz. She has published numerous articles on the subject and presented lectures throughout the country at conferences and academic institutions including the American String Teachers National Conference in Kansas City, Virginia Intermont College, Milligan College, East Tennessee State University, Northeast State
